President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) explained the reason for building infrastructure outside Java. Even if viewed from economic and political calculations it is more profitable to build in Java.
“Why do we have to build in Papua, in North Maluku, in NTT, why do we have to build in Eastern Indonesia? Because we are state, not business, not just economics,” he said while attending the 50th Anniversary of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Indonesia at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Jakarta, Monday (09/24/2018).
The Head of State stressed that Indonesia is not just Java. “Indonesia has 17 thousand islands. I see the inequality of infrastructure in the west, middle, east, really very striking and very wide,” he said.
The President said, without good infrastructure, Indonesia would have a hard time competing with other countries. In his presentation, the President pointed out that road infrastructure in Papua is an example. “How can this country compete, have a good competitiveness index, have good competitiveness if road infrastructure like that? It will not be possible,” he said.
In the uncertain global economic situation due to trade wars, as well as the crises in Argentina and Turkey, the President said that the thing to do is strong consolidation and coordination between monetary, fiscal and business world.
According to him, if all three sectors are solid, it will be easy to build public trust, markets, and international trust. “This country now needs it. If you build trust and market confidence so that the international community and the domestic market believe that we have a seriousness to solve the problems that exist in this country,” he said.
