After finishing fourth in the women’s shot put F20 earlier in the day, Rica Oktavia overcame her disappointment by showing her superiority in her specialty event, the women’s long jump T20, for those with intellectual impairments, to win Indonesia’s third gold at the 2018 Asian Para Games.
Competing in the category shortly after she finished up in the shot put, Rica recorded a best jump of 5.25 meters, leaving behind silver medalist Siti Noor Radiah Ismail of Malaysia, who jumped 5.18 m.
Sonomi Sakai of Japan followed in third place after jumping 5.02 m.
Rica’s victory was the best achievement of her career after winning the gold in the same category at the 2015 ASEAN Para Games in Singapore. She did not take part in last year’s biennial event in Kuala Lumpur.
“I jumped 5.20 m during practice and I could not believe that I exceeded [that jump],” she told journalists after the medal ceremony, adding that she had been practicing the sport since elementary school.
Rica’s win was warmly welcomed by her roommate Suparniyati, who beat her in the shot put event. The two Sumatran women, who have known each other since 2009, hugged to celebrate Rica’s victory. (yan)
