President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) inaugurated two new airports in East Kalimantan, namely Maratua Airport on Maratua Island in Berau Regency and Aji Pangeran Tumenggung Airport (APT) Pranoto in Samarinda City, East Kalimantan, on Thursday (25/10/2018).
The inauguration of the new airport is one of Jokowi’s main agendas in his working visit in Samarinda. The ceremonial event for the inauguration of the airport was centered at APT Pranoto in Samarinda City. The new Samarinda Airport and Maratua are one of 15 new to improve national connectivity carried out by the Ministry of Transportation.
Jokowi said, the construction of two new airports in Samarinda to improve air connectivity in Indonesia, which can facilitate the movement of goods and the community, while supporting the promotion of tourist destinations in Samarinda, namely Derawan Island which is famous for its beautiful beauty.
“Derawan tourism entrance has now been officially opened,” said President Jokowi in an official statement quoted by Kabare.id.
In line with the President, Minister of Tourism (Menpar) Arief Yahya said that if the construction of a new airport is a strategic step that is very beneficial for various sectors, one of which is tourism. The opening of a new airport in Samarinda will automatically help increase the economic turnover in the area.
“This airport in the future will be the entrance gate for tourists both domestic and foreign tourists to Samarinda,” said Menpar Arief Yahya.
“Currently, tourists who want to visit Derawan need not hesitate, because accessibility to Samarinda has increased through the presence of these two special airports,” added Arief Yahya.
Menpar is optimistic that the target of achieving 20 million foreign tourists and 275 million domestic trips in 2019 will be realized with the presence of new airports that will soon be completed at various destinations in Indonesia.
The construction of two new airports carries the concept of green airport by combining natural lighting, and arrangement of greenery. The airport is also equipped with several supporting facilities and is decorated with typical Dayak-style building ornaments, such as Dayak typical carving and coloring.
The use of this typical Dayak ornament is none other than to promote the beauty of Dayak culture as one of Indonesia’s pride. (rls / bas)
