Jokowi’s Strategy to Maintain Agricultural Commodity Prices

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said that the issue of cropping patterns that were less noticed by farmers often affected the fall in commodity prices during the harvest.

“Production is abundant but it is not regulated. What happens is the price drops. Be careful, such arrangements need to be carried out,” Jokowi said while visiting thousands of agricultural instructors gathered at the GOR Jatidiri, Karangrejo, Semarang City, on Sunday, February 3, 2019.

The solution given by Jokowi is to encourage the agricultural industry to downstream agricultural products. “The downstreaming of agricultural products is indeed a must and this is what we are preparing,” Jokowi said.

For this reason, he said, the existence of agricultural extension workers is very important to help improve the welfare of farmers. He said, one of the real examples is the productivity of corn commodities which is increasing, marked by a decrease in the number of corn imports from 3.6 million tons in 2014 to 180 thousand tons in 2018.

“I see the figure (2014) 3.6 million tons. Last year our corn imports were 180,000 tons. This means that we have reduced nearly 3.4 million tons of corn imports from abroad. That’s the success of you, ladies and gentlemen, in improving production, “said the President. (bpmi / bas)
