The Ministry of Agriculture through the Agricultural Quarantine Agency (Barantan) exports 108 processed coconut from West Sumatra (West Sumatra) to foreign countries.
“Of the 7 agricultural commodities exported today, thank God there are exports of 3 processed products from coconut commodities,” said Head of Barantan, Ali Jamil in a written statement on Thursday (1/8/2019).
Jamil explained that not only coconut milk and grated coconut were sold overseas, but the coconut water from West Sumatra had also penetrated the European and American markets.
Jamil said there were 35.2 tons of coconut milk worth Rp. 612.7 million for the Netherlands and Britain, 37.2 tons of grated coconut worth Rp. 827 million for Germany and Norway, and 36 tons of coconut water valued at Rp. 308 million for Britain.
According to the Head of Padang Agriculture Quarantine, Eka Hernida Yanto, in 2018 the total exports of processed coconut reached 8,615 tons or worth Rp 111, 92 billion. Whereas 2019 has reached 6,221 tons or worth Rp 82.85 billion.
“Even though it is only 6 months, it has reached 72% compared to 2018 exports,” Eka explained.
In addition to coconut processed commodities, which are exported this time there are 11,000 MT of palm shells intended for Japan. Palm kernel shells are the largest export commodity in West Sumatra. By 2019, it has reached 234 thousand tons or worth Rp 234 billion. According to Eka, this is the first export of palm shells for PT Pinang Mas Energy.
“This is in line with the policy of the Minister of Agriculture in an effort to accelerate export acceleration, adding a variety of commodities is one of the programs that are encouraged in addition to growing new exporters from young people,” he said.
Eka added that Barantan with the Agro Gemilang program was ready to provide technical guidance and assistance to exporters of agricultural commodities to the global market.
The other three commodities that were also given the phytosanitary certificate today were 173.2 tons of cinnamon for Britain, France and Singapore valued at Rp. 14.6 billion. Then there were 102.7 tons of areca nut or valued at Rp 1.8 billion for Thailand and 100.8 tons of processed rubber for India valued at Rp 2.2 billion.
The phytosanitary certificate is a guarantee given by the Agriculture Quarantine Agency that the commodity has passed quarantine inspection as required by the export destination country.
The Governor of West Sumatra, represented by the Expert Staff of the Governor of West Sumatra, Muhammad Yani, also attended and released exports. He said that the agricultural potential of West Sumatra must be supported by the potential of human resources to be able to add value to the benefits. Especially for business people to be able to compete with other countries.
The West Sumatra Provincial Government gave an appreciation to the Ministry of Agriculture through Barantan which facilitated the ease of the process of exporting West Sumatra agricultural commodities.
“All elements in the institutions of the West Sumatra Provincial Government fully support the acceleration of exports that are intensively carried out on business people to continue to provide benefits for all and invite them to continue to innovate so that agricultural products provide added value to the country’s foreign exchange earnings,” he said.
